December 2016 Members Newsletter
Nadolig Llawen !!!
A bumper issue this month, and almost on time………………….a quick thank you from the editor to all the contributors whose input make it much easier to compile the newsletters over the year, and of course to you the readers for taking the time to read it.
A very successful annual dinner was held at The Cliff, with numerous trophies presented, but most importantly, a celebration of Pat and Lil Malloys 25 year tenure as stewards at the club.
Pat and Lil would like to thank everyone that came to the dinner, they had a great night and an evening they thoroughly enjoyed.
The raffle at the dinner raised £522 so a big big thank you to everyone who donated prizes and all the people who were so generous with their donations in the envelopes.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - WEDNESDAY 7TH DECEMBER
A final reminder, copies of the agenda, minutes of the EGM and last AGM, along with a copy of the draft accounts are in the clubhouse. More copies will be available on the night.
There is one vacancy for a 3 year term, and of course we STILL need a TREASURER.
Remember, following the changes to the constitution at the EGM, all adult playing member categories are eligible to attend and vote.
Members Subscriptions – Ken Snelgrove
Members will see form the draft accounts that the club has incurred a small loss for the year ending August 2016, largely as the result of a drop in income from the bar and green fees. This, along with decisions to undertake much needed re-furbishment of the stewards bathroom and improvements in course machinery, has placed a strain on cashflow. December and January are always low points for income generation and whilst an agreement has been reached with the bank for a temporary increase in our overdraft facility, this will come at a cost. It would therefore be helpful if members consider paying their subscriptions sooner rather than later to obviate the need for the increased cash facility. Maybe if you brought your cheque book to the AGM……?
The Christmas party season is now here, make sure you book for food in the evening, as the restaurant may well be busy, with many lunchtimes and evenings fully booked.
Christmas Draw – Friday 16th December
Sheets will be up by this weekend, so dust off those Christmas hats and jumpers.
The last quiz was on Fri 25th November, with a really good turnout of 7 teams. During the year, more than £500 has been raised, so a really big thanks to Quizmasters Terry and Lyndsay, all the helpers, in particular Shelagh, and the biggest thanks of all to the question setter, the one and only Muriel. Next quiz will be in January.
WINTER OPEN – Geoff Snape
The 1st Winter Open took place on the 25th November. If you want a perfect November day for golf on a course in excellent condition then those who took part on Friday were the lucky ones. 23 Teams including 2 from Penrhos, 2 from Cilgwyn and 1 from Newport took part in our 4 ball better ball competition. Five 2′s were recorded, James Pegg getting nearest the pin on 16th, Rob Clark hitting the green in 2 on the 4th & ending nearest the pin. The main winners though were 2 local boys in Dyfed Jones & James Pegg scoring 43 points. The Newport pair in Dai Lindquist and John Morris finished in 2nd spot followed by from Rhys Evans & Steffan Roberts from Cilgwyn in 3rd position. Prizes shared out nicely.
Thank you to everyone for their support and hopefully more of our Members and Visitors from South & West Wales will join us for our next Winter Open on Friday 27th January, with further Opens planned for February and March. £20 for Members & £30 for Visitors, including a bacon roll and coffee, is great value for a fun day in supporting our Golf Club.
Will commence on Saturday 3rd December, formats on the noticeboard, start sheets in the normal place.
GDW JUNIOR GOLFCERT AWARD
A big thank you to parents, children and Steven, Helen, Aled, and Sophie, but most of all Emyr and Julia, for achieving the GDW junior accreditation award, we are currently the only club in Dyfed to have been given this and only one of seven clubs Wales!!
WALES SPORTS AWARD
And while we are on the subject of awards, we would like to congratulate Julia Den-Hartog on her nomination for Volunteer of The Year. At the instigation of, and supported by, Golf Development Wales, the club proposed Julia for this award, run by the BBC and Sport Wales, with the ceremony being held this weekend. Julia has been working hard for the club in many areas for the last few years, notably the juniors and New2golf, and is an inspiration to us all. Sadly, Julia has not made the top three, but we are deeply grateful for her being a member of our club, and pushing us into places we would have not otherwise gone. Richly deserved recognition.
Next Saturday is the last weekend of our 8 week Golf Roots program so a big thank you to all the volunteers and Steven. Sixteen youngsters signed up for it and will receive their certificates at the junior Christmas lunch.
Junior Christmas lunch will be held on Saturday 17th December with a mini comp, fun games and presentations. All juniors are welcome, the cost is £5 to include a meal and drink. Please could you let Julia or the pro shop know if you are going to attend. 0915 to play, food at 1100.
Seniors – Trevor Boyce
With the season over it is a quiet time for the Seniors. Members continue playing in our Tuesday and Thursday roll ups. Many of us are looking ahead to our Christmas dinner at the club on the 15th December, it will be preceded by a Turkey Trot, 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes, will hopefully be vouchers from a local butchers. After the meal Nigel is organising an auction, an event that is always enjoyable.
In November we played a match with the Ladies, two Ladies and two Seniors in each team. Although it rained all day everybody seemed to thoroughly enjoy the themselves. The winning team was Helena Horrocks, Julia Den Hartog, Barrie Davies and Trevor Boyce. Our thanks to Lorna and all of the Ladies for an enjoyable time and for the refreshments. Hope we can do this again.
More than a few Senior members played in the first Winter Open 4 bbb on a lovely sunny day complete with blue skies. Our thanks to the club and especially Geoff Snape for the organisation.
Don’t forget that the Ladies AGM is on Dec 6th when we will welcome our new Captain Helena Horrocks and vice Anne Davies. The Captains drive in on Dec 13th at 11am with the Ladies Dinner on Dec 13th at 4.30 for 5pm.
Tiger 2017 – Lyndsay Morgan
Unfortunately the 2016 season did not turn out too well but I am sure that many of the people that played enjoyed their matches. Due to a mix up the Tigers team has been relegated from division 2 to division 4 because we failed to fulfil a fixture.
Though I, like others, didn’t like the decision, it has been made and in the strict rules of the leagues that is where we are. The other teams in division 4 are Cwmrhydneuadd, Priskilly, St Davids and Rosemarket.
I propose that rather than sulk about what has happened; we get involved and have a laugh with the keen golfers at these courses, 3 of which are fairly near neighbours. I will be asking for available players in the New Year. We have drawn Newport away in the Jeff Harries Bowl.
Our shop is a lot bigger than it may appear, remember you can order from Foremost using the link on the club website, http://www.cardigangolf.com/professional/online-shopping/
This gives you free delivery to the golf club, and free returns as well, so no excuses not to order those Christmas presents now. Of course we always keep gloves, tees, balls, hats and a range of clothing in stock for that last minute purchase, secret santa or stocking filler.
And finally, a message from retiring Captain, Lyndsay Morgan
I am just coming to the end of my tenure as Captain of our fine club and I would like to take this opportunity to extend a few thank yous. It has been a good year for the club and for myself but that doesn’t happen by accident. It is the hard work and diligence of the people that volunteer their time to keep the club going that allows the rest of us to enjoy the benefits.
The Chairman, treasurer and secretaries positions are unpaid and with very few, if any, benefits other than their personal desire to help and do a job well. This is also the same for all the other executive members and the people that run our various sections and teams and volunteer for the odd jobs that come up through the years. My personal thanks go to all of them. We always need more people to put themselves forward to help.
The course this year has been brilliant and I would like to thank Rob Clark and his team for their efforts on presenting a great course time after time this year, which has been praised by many members and visitors alike.
I have had marvellous help from Pat and Lil and their staff in their support for our functions and events but also for their advise in preventing me making too many mistakes through the year.
Lastly, I thank all the members and visitors, old and new for their support, understanding, banter and for making my year a happy one. Diolch o gallon.
